Joseph Campbell trying to find a common path of human transformation in Myth in "The Hero with Thousand Faces".
I haven't finished yet, or I should say I was just started to read it.
The more information we receive today, the border of sexsuality is more blurred. That makes us hard to recognize "What is the basic components of a man".
So I started to think: can we find any common of a hero in our culture? It's an interesting topic.
The only thing I can figure out so far is:
1. James Bond doesn't have families
2. Jason Bourne also
3. Clark Kent become Superman with shelter (his clothes and his unidentity)
4. Batman/Spiderman, too
So I think the common is, they become hero when they have no attachments to emotion or reality. That doesn't means we should detach what we already have. But to lower down the affect and concentrate on what you're doing is very important.
There must be more common, and I'll keep on finding it.
